Welcome to the Balranald Shire

Balranald Shire covers an area of approximately 21,400 square kilometres - almost half the size of The Netherlands - and the main centre, Balranald, is located on the Sturt Highway and the Murrumbidgee River and is approximately 60 metres above sea level. Euston, the Shire's second town, located 80kms west of Balranald on the Sturt Highway, is on the Murray River. Other localities in the Shire include Kyalite, Oxley, Penarie (Homebush), Hatfield and Clare. The population of Balranald Shire is approximately 3000.

The Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Murray, Edward and Wakool Rivers form the southern boundaries of the Shire and these are popular waters for fishermen. A large number of the lakes in the Shire, shown on most maps, are dry lake beds. For example Lake Mungo at Mungo National Park in the north east of the Shire, is one of a series of dry lake beds within the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area that have been dry since the last Ice Age some 15,000 years ago. Other lakes such as Lake Yanga in Yanga National Park just east of Balranald have been periodically dry and very low rainfall periods are affecting them now.

The average summer temperature is around 28 degrees centigrade without the humidity prevalent in coastal regions. Winters are usually mild with cool to cold nights and fine days.
